I went to my first sci-fi/anime convention yesterday (Con Nooga in Chattanooga, TN), and it was almost everything I hoped it would be. There was a costume contest and a gaming tournament (actually more of a room with lots of consoles in it) and tons of other stuff to do. I actually enjoyed talking to strangers there too. There are actually a lot more socially adept nerds than I gave the culture credit for. Of course, there are the kind of people who would sit down to a game of Munchkins with us and lewdly hit on my good friends (one of whom is married to the guy she was sitting NEXT TO). I berated him in no uncertain terms (well, vaguely uncertain) and he still didn't get it. I am half pissed at him and half feel sorry for him. It was so bad that Jon and I used a corset making class as an excuse to leave the table.
Despite that guy (and a few others), the folks there were pretty cool. It felt really good that so many people actually recognized my costume (Jayne Cobb, Firefly). I don't think I recognized many people though... I don't watch much anime and most people there were dressed as an anime character. Although, there was this adorable little kid dressed perfectly as Inuyasha (sp?), ridiculously large sword and all. I was so overcome with awe (read: aww) that I forgot to take a picture though.
